At RR Donnelley, we've made great strides in reducing environmental emissions and conserving natural resources. Our goal is for our operations to meet all government-set standards globally. In many cases our performance goes well beyond what is required of us.
- We have continuously increased the solvent recovery efficiencies at our facilities. As a result, we have recovered over 100 million additional pounds of toluene during the period since 1990, preventing its release to the environment.
Company-wide Solvent Recovery Efficiency

The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is a publicly available EPA database that contains information on toxic chemical releases and other waste management activities reported annually by certain covered industry groups as well as federal facilities. This inventory was established under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 (EPCRA) and expanded by the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990. As part of our commitment to reporting our results we are including our most recent TRI data.
Please note that the information below includes data from former Moore Wallace facilities beginning in 2004 (merger date was 02/27/2004). Data for Spencer Press prior to 2005 not included. Data for Banta, Perry-Judd's, and Von Hoffmann facilities prior to 2007 not included.
2008 TRI Releases
- In 2008 we released approximately 2.76 million pounds of TRI-regulated compounds, mostly toluene from our gravure operations. While this may seem like a large amount, we currently recover more than 97% of the toluene from our operations. Additionally, this number is down 22% from 2008.
TRI History
- You can see from this chart that we continue to improve our performance with respect to the amount of TRI compounds we release. From 1987 to 2008 we have reduced our TRI releases by over 87%.
TRI History for Toluene
- Toluene is the largest source of TRI emissions in our gravure operations. From 1987 to 2008 we have reduced our TRI releases for Toluene by over 89%.
TRI History for Fountain Solution
- Fountain solution is the largest source of TRI emissions in our offset operations. Since 1989 we have reduced total emissions by nearly 45% while significantly increasing our total number of facilities.
